Are You All Rowing In The Same Direction?

Of the work we did together one of the fascinating things was learning how 4 individuals who in their own right were stars, top of their game learnt to be the most effective team and what it took on each of their parts and collectively to win that gold!

Each of the guys knew very clearly which part they played in the team and knew and understood how they each contributed to the team; their individual strengths.

Everyone in the team knew the team's core values and critical success factors; they knew what would hinder them as a team, for example anyone getting ill, so took every precaution to prevent that.

If you are currently part of a team or work within a team can you answer these questions:

  • What part do you play in the team?
  • What do you contribute to the team?
  • What is the greatest value you bring?
  • What are the strengths you bring that no on else can?
  • What evidence can you draw on to answer the questions above?

In the current climate of uncertainty when the key is not to make "knee jerk" decisions and instead pull together as one team, make sure you:

Realise the strengths of those around you; Aspire to understand the contribution each person brings; and

Do behave in a way that supports your colleagues - so that together you are all rowing in the same direction!

  • Recently, I was delivering the "First 90 Days in your New Role" for LHH. This is a workshop which generates great discussion around helping people who are still interviewing to find their next appropriate opportunity and to think about how they would answer this question at interview.
