Christmas Cheer! When You're Smiling, The Whole World Smiles With You

There are only 7 days left until Christmas, which I always feel seems to put people in a better mood. So, what about those people in our lives who always make us smile? The family and friends who bring out the best in us; who know us, and who we can be ourselves with? Being the "authentic you" is important!

My husband and I just spent a weekend in Berlin with some very good friends, where we laughed and kicked our shoes off! As we say from an Insights Discovery perspective, we were able to become our “unconscious personas”, i.e. the “real you” and the “you” you are when you think no-one is watching!

For some of us, our “conscious persona" (how we choose to behave at work) and our unconscious persona (how we choose to be at home) are the same. However, for many people their conscious and unconscious personas are different, and as a coach the really interesting thing for me is to understand what makes you feel that you need to be a different person at work. Is it the environment you work within? The culture of the organisation? Perhaps it's the way you're managed?

Wouldn’t it be great if more of us could work in an environment that allowed us to be the "real" us, instead of believing we have to behave in a certain way? When we're not true to ourselves and are failing to live by our natural drivers, it can be very draining. It can also potentially mean we may display our "distortive behaviours", i.e. those that are less than positive.

With Christmas fast approaching, take some time to reflect on how, where, and with whom you can be the “real you”.

Realise how energised you could feel if you were doing what you loved with people who value the "real you";
Aspire to work towards your natural drivers more; and
Do be the “real you”!

    This old adage is so true whether applied to recruitment methods, meetings or retaining talent to name but a few areas.
