What Makes You Smile?

Have you asked yourself this question? It could be a whole manner of things, and for each one of us it's probably something completely different. For me, it's my family and dancing as if no-one is watching!

It's very important for our own health and well-being that we take time to focus on self-care and what makes us smile! The largest number of incidences of absence in the workplace are stress, anxiety and depression. Therefore it's vital to understand what is causing these feelings and how we relate to them, as well as the significant health implications stress can have on us.

Learn to stop stress in it’s tracks with guided practices like STOP, which can make a big difference and is something every one of us can do:

  1. Stop;
  2. Take a breath;
  3. Observe; and
  4. Proceed.
In any situation we find stressful, it can be helpful to STOP before we react. Try talking to someone you trust - this could be a family member, work colleague, your line manager or a medical professional. As the saying goes - it’s good to talk!

We are naturally social beings. Connecting with others provides richness in life, makes us feel safe, and reminds us that we’re part of something greater. In work, be curious about your colleagues as if getting to know them for the first time.

Personal resilience is your capacity to remain both flexible and strong in the midst of ambiguity and change. Good personal resilience will help you to:

  • Bounce back from physical and emotional stress;
  • Absorb high levels of change and remain effective;
  • Adjust to disruptions in life, and;
  • Maintain high levels of productivity.

I appreciate that sometimes we simply lose touch with our personal resilience, or some of the pieces of the jigsaw feel like they're missing. These past few months may have had a cumulative effect on how you feel. Some days may have felt like really hard work - I know they have for me!

Realise what causes you stress and how you relate to it;
Aspire to be that trusted confidant to family, friends and colleagues; and
Do smile when you wake up in the morning, and do it before you do anything else!

Let me know the difference this makes to your life! I'd also love to hear what it is that makes you smile - why not send me a message and let me know?

    This old adage is so true whether applied to recruitment methods, meetings or retaining talent to name but a few areas.
