Being Human | Article 6 | I'm Helping Put a Man on the Moon

Today in the current world and as we move to what my colleagues at The Art of Work Ltd, Sandra Evans and Julie Blunt, are calling “hybrid” working, having clear deliverables for each member of your team and the department/business will be critical.

It was critical before, however it still amazes me how some organisations don't set objectives for their employees, don't actually have a vision for the business that can be cascaded down to each department/function.

Being able to articulate clearly following SMARTS (S - specific; M - measurable; A - achievable; R - realistic; T - timely or time bound; S - stretch) structure how each member of your team contributes to the overall goals of your team will support engagement; give clarity and a sense of purpose.

Performance management is often viewed in a negative light, namely to improve poor performance, however a well planned and communicated performance management system ensures that everyone is engaged and that those who are considered your “star performers” also continue to be motivated and engaged.

For me too what will be important going forward is the power of team objectives and collaboration to deliver success.

Here are some of my thoughts to hopefully inspire:

As a people manager how can you have discussions with your teams to facilitate and enable them to determine their objectives to achieve success and add value to the department and the business overall?

What can you do to create that high trust environment?

What needs to change in how you operate currently to facilitate peer empowerment and sharing rather than individual team members working it out on their own?

How as a team do you inspire a way of working that promotes learning from the experience and dynamic roles?

Without realising when we first went into lockdown over a year ago, managers and organisations had to pass control down and empower team members.

Wouldn’t it be great to:

Realise the positive reactions achieved from peer empowerment and collaboration;

Aspire to make this the norm and continue to role model these behaviours; so that we all

Do “put a man on the moon!”

Would welcome any thoughts and feedback please.

Thanks

Jacqueline

    This old adage is so true whether applied to recruitment methods, meetings or retaining talent to name but a few areas.
